Heard of XYZE yet? The Italian startup recently launched an Indigogo campaign. We’ve all been there: online shopping is convenient, fun, it saves time and sometimes money. But when you guess wrong about the size, you have to deal with returns and re-ordering. And I admit I am part of these people who just forget the package and never send it back, because of the complicated terms of returns, lack of time to go to the Post office, or any other excuse… Well, XYZE’s got a solution for that.
Coming from Italy, home of couture clothiers and highly trained tailors, the startyup XYZE (pronounce “size”) introduces On, a unique circular measuring tape. The On tape helps you taking your own measurements as precisely as a trained tailor. Making sure the size you order will be the right one every time, no matter what brand or website you order from.
So, you’re sitting in your couch, browsing e-shops on your tablet. And suddenly you come across this marvellous skirt/pants… But then you remember your last order, still hanging aimlessly in your closet. This situation never has to happen again. Now, you just take your XYZE On, pull the tape out, put it around your head, neck, chest, waist & hips. Magic. The exact measurements are sent via Bluetooth to the On smartphone app. Your XYZE data, called XYZE ID, automatically gets stored on a personal digital profile. A seven-step tutorial ensures measurements are taken perfectly every time.
The best part? XYZE acts as a “size search engine”, it translates your measurements into a brand’s particular size specifications, so as you type a brand name, the app displays which size you will fit in for each brand.
“A frustrating and expensive problem with online clothes shopping is ordering the wrong size and having to return the product and re-ordering,” explains the CEO Andrea Mazzon and the COO Paolo Spiga, founders at XYZE. “In Italy we understand beautiful clothes, style, design and fit. With On and the XYZE app, we aim to drastically improve the online shopping experience. We have combined technology and fashion so everyone can be confident about the size they order every time they make a purchase“.
The device, which has been on development for 18 months, features:
- Bluetooth connected wearable circular measuring tape which sends data to the XYZE app,
- A 160 cm (63”) circular measuring tape with a removable 3V battery (48-month battery life),
- iOS & Android mobile app to collect body measurements from waist, hips, chest, etc., and create the XYZE ID, your personal digital profile, to instantly get you the perfect size,
- Tutorial app to help you get tailor-perfect measurements,
- The “What’s My Size” algorithm will be integrated in your favorite brand’s e-commerce portal
We’ll still have to wait until we get to see wheather this new online shopping tool will help us get rid of receiving wrong sizes. But with all the digital fitting rooms that promise more than they can actually bring (for the moment at least), the On device seems to be a rather good solution to skipping awkward approximative 3D-versions of you.
The On smart tape measure is available for pre-order on the XYZE IndieGoGo campaign through March 7 with a goal of 60,000 euros ($67,710 USD).
