SXSW 2018 | PUMA x SEGA RS-0 Sonic Annoucement

When iconic animated characters crash into the Sneakers Market

in brief

During a SXSW Gaming Panel in Austin this year, the Sonic team announced a surprising collaboration: this spring, PUMA is launching their new RS-0 sneaker – which is a reboot of their classic ’80s Running System (RS) line – with some help from SEGA icon Sonic the Hedgehog.

Vintage sneakers reissues are pretty common these days, with reactions ranging from wild excitement to some mere « meh » moments. But a specific announcement caught our eyes during the last days of the SXSW festival in Austin.

In an unaccessible stuffed place (FOMO much?) for the Sonic Panel entitled « Gotta Go Fast: The Official Sonic the Hedgehog Panel », that attracted a lot of fans of all age, the Sonic Team (which included Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, Sonic PD Director Austin Keys, Sonic Mania Animation Director Tyson Hesse, and Sonic Social Media Manager Aaron Webber) made many exciting game announcement that set Twitter on fire.

In all this turmoil, we were lucky enough to spot a teaser video which was premiered to announce a coming collaboration between the SEGA franchise and the PUMA brand: this spring, PUMA is launching their new RS-0 sneaker – which is a reboot of their classic ’80s Running System (RS) line – with some help from SEGA icon Sonic the Hedgehog.

Bringing the Sonic universe into the realm of exclusive sport lifestyle footwear, using Sonic’s vibrant world and character as inspiration, the influence is clear in this first preview, with Sonic’s eye-catching combination of blue, red, green, and yellow enveloping the shoe.

While many could have expected something closer from the Sonic signature shoes (red with the stripe and buckle), this release still as the potential to attract nostalgic sneaker addicts seduced by the retro gaming inspired kicks.

Additional info surrounding the PUMA x SEGA RS-0 Sonic is set to be revealed over the coming weeks! Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay informed and receive updates about the release.
