PFW | Chanel Airlines lights up your feet

Since its last Couture show featured 3D printed suits, I was looking forward to seeing what Chanel could bring us with its SS16 Ready-to-Wear runway. Well, even if it’s not stunning as it was for its Casino, I admit I’m happy to see Karl brought a little touch of tech to its Chanel Airlines-themed runway this morning.

Chanel and tech have been a weird couple in the past, refusing to have an e-commerce site until last April, the brand has not always been seen as one keen to embrace Fashion Tech. But at the same time, Karl has been showcasing light-up shoes since 2008, with its Pre-Fall show lightbulb shoes (as seen here). Then, in 2011, he closed the show with flashlight-fitted shoes, making quite bad critics go around it, maybe he was too early? But then again, last April, a pair of lighting heels popped up at the Cruise 2015 show, worn by Julianne Moore.

Well, this time, as shown on above pictures, Karl chose to feature some LEDs on platform shoes. The shoes light up like runways in planes, you know, the little LEDs that show you where the exit is, just in case… Now the question is will people actually buy it (if it’s even buyable, and not just a gimmick for the show)? I guess yes, because Chanel has been changing a lot these past few years, showing way more interest into the Millennials shoppers, who will slowly replace the old good elegant lady: with a highly Instagrammable supermarket show, its Casino, and now its airlines (even if I’m a bit disappointed, Karl already used the concept of a plane in 2011). Let’s wait until next season to see if tech is again part of the show! In the meantime, you can watch Baptiste Giabiconi getting out of the show on his futurist skateboard!
